Attitude is Everything

03/30/2021

Our attitude has a powerful effect on the outcome of our lives. Things may go wrong; we may struggle through the day, but our demeanor can help drive us forward when there is no other hint that we should continue. When we have a bad day, do we have to have a bad attitude? NO, we do not! Some people find this surprising. How often have we had a good day, and our mood does not reflect that fact? If we can have a sour disposition when things are going well, we can certainly afford a positive attitude while things are going wrong.

Elvis Presley once said, "When things go wrong, don't go with them." Mr. Presley may not be the first resource we think of regarding our mindset, but his success certainly displays an ability to overcome adversity.

When things go south, how do we maintain a productive temperament? Even more important, how do we keep a positive attitude in general. There are a few basic techniques that can be applied by anyone and have proven to be successful. You probably already know these techniques, but a reminder can guide us back to a positive state of mind.

Surround yourself with positive people. Avoid negative people, especially when you are having a bad day or facing a pessimistic mood. We all know the person that does nothing but complain. Steer clear of them when you are feeling down so they can not drag you down further.

Focus on the positive things in your life. Be grateful for what you have. Our January 2020 newsletter discussed the advantages of being grateful and showing people gratitude.

Manage your expectations. If we expect too much too often, we are setting ourselves up for disappointment. Be reasonable when setting goals. Try establishing both a reachable goal and a dream goal.

Take a brief break. Some people like to meditate; others choose to exercise. What you do is not as important as the break you get from the activity that is causing negativity.

Do something for someone else. Helping others can boost your mood. Serving others not only helps your attitude, but it also promotes positivity in those that you help.

Do not quit. Quitting fosters apathy, and apathy sows the seeds of negativity. Change course, modify your plans but do not give up.

Hopefully, these techniques help foster a more productive mindset. Improving ourselves can build a positive attitude; as long as we are moving forward, we can fight against negativity.
