What's the Problem?
We all understand the basics of marketing. Understanding what our customers want or need and providing solutions that meet those needs. It sounds simple, but if it were, advertising would not be a multi-billion dollar business. In its simplest form, marketing is about recognizing our customer's problems and offering a way to solve them.

Marketing also attempts to influence consumers as businesses create products to meet customer demands. Marketing to consumer needs is often more difficult than filling the demand for a shopper's wants. People tend to put off purchasing items they need until it is essential. When a person wants something, they usually attempt to acquire it as soon as possible.

The difference is satisfying an urge or fulfilling a desire (want) versus solving a problem (need). The sweet spot in marketing is when we do both. If I need a car for transportation and I get the vehicle I want, I am much happier than if I got an automobile strictly for transportation. Marketing should drive us to get what we want to fulfill our needs. It all comes down to solving a problem.

If you aren't certain what problem your product solves, ask your existing customers. There is a good chance they are buying your product to solve a specific issue. Some mysteries are easy to identify. People buy groceries to resolve hunger. We purchase homes for shelter. Hunger, however, can be fixed just as easily with ground beef as it can with lobster. If all we care about is lodging, a small ranch house works as well as a mansion.

The best marketing helps our customers get what they want to fill their needs. What's the Problem?
