Marketing Your Site What's New ?
Considering a Change to Your Website?

We have all heard that "Change is good" and for the most part this is true. The old saying "If you are not Moving forward, you are Going backward" makes a similar point. Progress, although painful at times has a way of benefiting society as a whole. But is change for the sake of change a good idea?

Making changes to what already works is typically a recipe for disaster. There are several examples in history. The new Coca Cola, Ford Edsel, I've fallen and I can't get up (Memorable but can you remember what they were selling?), and more recently the King from Burger King Commercials. Some of these campaigns, like the Burger King ads, ran for years but were never effective. Granted these aren't website changes but they illustrate a point. If major companies spending millions of dollars on marketing can make a mistake by changing their promotional strategy what kind of impact will change have on small businesses?

I am not saying you should never change; on the contrary, strategic change is good. Keep in mind however that a wholesale change in the way your website is laid out, the pages included in your site or the content you offer visitors can have a huge impact on the benefits your site will provide. Search engine optimization can be heavily impacted by major changes in the amount or content of the pages on your site. Changing page names, the key elements of high profile pages or even the navigation structure of your website can have a detrimental effect on search engine results.

It is really very straight forward; quality websites offer quality content for their visitors. The content should be up to date and relevant to the products or services you offer. There is no magic marketing trick that will make your website a popular one (no matter what anyone tries to tell you), or search engine trick that will guarantee you top results. There is however a method or strategy that has proven to work again and again. Offer quality relevant up to date content with quick, easy navigation and a pleasing look and you won't have to worry about drastic changes.
