Cocaine and Crack

Cocaine and crack are toxic, addictive, psychoactive substances that have significant physiological and psychological consequences for users. Perhaps even more significant and unfortunate, however, are the negative effects that cocaine and crack users have on their families, communities, workplaces, and society. Domestic violence and random violence are often fueled by cocaine or crack. Children are often the victims of cocaine- or crack-using parents and suffer from pre natal exposure or parental abuse.

The Behavioral Impact of Heroin Use?

The behavioral impact of habitual heroin use is generally devastating. Most habitual users are incapable of concentration, learning, or clear thought. Rarely are they able to hold a job. They are apathetic, indifferent to consequences, and unable to sustain personal relationships. For many, the inability to honestly earn enough to meet their drug needs leads to crime. For the overwhelming majority, compulsive use prompts behavior that is self-destructive and irresponsible, often antisocial, and characteristically indifferent to the injury, pain, or loss it causes others.

How Do Inhalants Harm You?

Because the immediate after-effects are usually mild and last only a short time, many abusers believe that inhalants are essentially harmless. They are wrong. Inhalants can be very dangerous, both in their immediate effects and their long-term consequences.

Even first-time users run the risk of sudden sniffing death (SSD). The mechanics are not well understood, but abusers may suffer fatal irregularity of heartbeat (arrhythmia) or complete heart arrest. The risk of SSD seems to be higher if the abuser engages in strenuous physical activity or is suddenly startled.

The Impact of Marijuana Use on Your Mind

Marijuana use reduces learning ability. Research has been piling up of late demonstrating clearly that marijuana limits the capacity to absorb and retain information. A 1995 study of college students discovered that the inability of heavy marijuana users to focus, sustain attention, and organize data persists for as long as 24 hours after their last use of the drug. Earlier research, comparing cognitive abilities of adult marijuana users with non-using adults, found that users fall short on memory as well as math and verbal skills. Although it has yet to be proven conclusively that heavy marijuana use can cause irreversible loss of intellectual capacity, animal studies have shown marijuana-induced structural damage to portions of the brain essential to memory and learning.

A Recent Study About Meth

Animal models predictive of human behavior were researched under conditions of unlimited access, (24hour availability to meth) and were found to self-adminster in cyclic patterns, just like humans.  The study further revealed that given an unlimited supply of meth, the animals will self adminster meth until its toxic effects cause death.  This study also provided the answers to questions related to users habits increasing over time, costing them more to get high and using more and more just to get high over time.

Smoking

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of premature death in the United States. It is estimated that directly or indirectly, tobacco causes more than 400,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, a figure that represents nearly 20 percent of all U.S. deaths. These deaths have been attributed to a number of conditions defined as tobacco-related, including heart disease (115,000 deaths), cancer (136,000), chronic pulmonary disease (60,000), and stroke (27,000). According to a study published by the British medical journal Lancet, the rate of tobacco-related mortality throughout the entire developed world also averages about 20 percent of all deaths.
