What's New

Are our kids safe? Of course they are, when they are with us. What about the internet? Many parents, after their children become proficient at navigating the internet, allow them to access the internet without supervision. Most of the time this leads to no harm, but we don't want to take a chance with our kids even one time. Although not all of this information is brand new it is worth looking at if it keeps our kids a little safer online.

Experts say the number one way we can keep our children safe online is to know what they are doing at all times. (Sounds like offline doesn't it?) That means we not only have to know when they are online, but also what they are doing, which sites they are going to, what they are seeing, and if chatting on MSN or ICQ, we need to know who they are talking to. This can be a little embarrassing for Mom and Dad especially if Junior is more experienced on the computer. For their safety it is necessary and it can be a fun way to learn.

There are tracking and key logging programs available that let you know exactly what is going on your computer. These programs, (mostly software) will even show you screen shots at specified intervals. If you are adept on the computer you can view temporary and history files with a text or script editor to see what's been going on. These measures probably aren't necessary unless you suspect  there is a problem. The Hot Links this month are all "cyber safety" sites. Even though they are geared toward kids, the advice is universal.

There is a great set of rules for safety on the internet at the Safe Kids site, the link below will take you directly to the rules.

$ Marketing Your Site $

This month I am revisiting the very first tip given in this section of the newsletter. Put your website address on everything! Sorry, didn't mean to yell. This marketing tool is so important it is worth revisiting. It is the least expensive way to advertise your website, and probably the most effective.

This is being brought up again because I patronize your businesses. As well you should, you may be thinking, and I agree. When I get a receipt, a bill, a bag or a printed ad with your name on it, guess what I look for. First the specials, of course, then I look for your web site address. I also hear radio ads, and see newspaper ads, and I listen or look for the same thing.

Some of you already have your web address on advertisements, others on printed receipts and bills. This is a great way to direct people to your website.

PPP Design is going to have a contest in September. Whoever comes up with the most innovative, creative or unique way to get their web address out to the public will receive one hour of changes or updates to their website for free. If you think you have the best idea, e-mail us and we will share the winning entry in the next newsletter. Email

Your Own Search Engine

Did you know you already have a search engine built into your browser? If you use Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla you can type any word into the address bar and your browser will search the internet for information that relates to the word(s) you input. Personally, I think Google is the best search engine (www.google.com) , but if you want to find something that isn't to obscure try your address bar first. It's fast and convenient.

Internet Explorer uses MSN search, Netscape uses their own search engine and  Mozilla uses Google.

 To customize your searches in Internet Explorer, click the Search button on the toolbar, and then click the Customize button in the Search bar. You can customize a variety of search options, or choose a default search provider.
