What's New

I recently stumbled across a little known but valuable resource at Stroud's CWSApps Website. This is a software rating and download site that has been around forever. The section that I stumbled in to offers downloads and updates for Windows compatible software that have been released or updated in the past week. A periodic visit provides an opportunity to keep popular applications up-to-date.  The rating system is simple and easy to understand, a 5 star system, with 5 being the highest possible rating.

Programs such as WinZipİ, Eudoraİ, and Adobe Acrobat Readerİ, are rated and offered for download. Many of the applications are free-ware.

Stroud's New Weekly App's

If you visit this week you will find Mozilla (An internet browser, the core for Netscape's browsers) as an un-rated selection. We mentioned Mozilla in an earlier newsletter. The site lists Mozilla as un-rated software, but I can tell you it is a great browser. I have used it for several months and it is stable, fast, and it allows you to stop pop-ups without additional software. It has a tabbed interface that is great if you often have several windows open at once.

Downloads on the site are categorized and it's easy to find information on software you may be interested in.

Get Like-minded Sites to Link to You

This is the key to high search engine ranking and placement. Link Popularity means how many sites link to you. The idea behind link popularity is that other sites will link to you only if you are a quality site offering quality resources. Google uses this concept while ranking websites. Get quality sites to link to you and you will get a good ranking in Google. This is also a great way to bring traffic to your site. Usually sites that link to you send you more traffic than the popular search engines.

Key Board Shortcuts

The fact is, you can do things faster with a keyboard than with a mouse. Here are some particularly useful keystrokes.

Ctrl-Esc: Display the Start menu (if you have a keyboard with no Windows logo key).

Alt-Esc and Alt-Shift-Esc: Cycle forward and backward through all open program windows. Hold Alt or Alt-Shift down and keep hitting Esc.

Alt-Tab: Cycle through the icons of open program windows to select an application. Hold the Alt key down and hit Tab to move from one program to the next. Release both keys to go to the program.

Ctrl-F6 and Ctrl-Shift-F6: Cycle forward or backward though all the open document windows in a single program, like Microsoft Word.

Shift-Del: Delete files rather than just sending them to the Recycle Bin.

Shift plus any of the arrow keys: Select multiple contiguous items in a list or file folder.

Ctrl-A: Select all.

It may take a few times using these shortcuts before they become second nature, but once familiar with them they can save you a lot of time.
