What's New ?

Holiday Preparation

Is your web site ready for the holidays? The holidays are the single largest sales season of the year and it is important that we are prepared.

It is crucial that we connect our "on the ground" promotions with our web site design. This doesn't mean we have to have the same promotions, sales or advertising, but we should make certain that what we are doing in our physical store doesn't conflict with what is on our web site. An online identity that is consistent with other advertising is the best way to promote your existing brand.

Take a moment before the holiday rush and make sure your web site is up to date and sending the same basic message as your physical store. This allows you to comfortably promote your web site during the busiest walk-in season of the year, which in turn gives you 24-7 advertising and your customers have another quality source for customer service.

The holidays are also an ideal time to prepare for the New Year. Promote your web site in your store or office and your customers will know they can beat the holiday rush by getting online.

Offering special internet only sales is a great cross selling technique. Special items or discounts need to be advertised so customers can take advantage of them when they visit or revisit your store or office.

In other words use the busy season to promote your web site and it will pay dividends in the New Year.

   A Few Items

There are a few items for the "What's New" section this month so let's get right to it.

Rumors Regarding AVG Anti-Virus Untrue

There have been several rumors bouncing around  the internet that suggest the Free Version of Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Software will be discontinued at the end of this year. When I first heard the rumor I must admit I was upset since we have recommended AVG in this newsletter several times.

Thankfully the rumors are untrue! Grisoft, the maker of AVG Anti-Virus software is discontinuing the current Version 6 of it's award winning software at the end of the year but they are offering a free upgrade to version 7. The upgrade is available now so if you currently use AVG you can follow the link below to update your anti-virus software. It is important that you update because support for Version 6 ends December 31, 2004.

I have been using the new version for a few weeks now without problem and still highly recommend the protection it offers.

War Driving

Have you ever heard of War Driving? Don't be surprised if you haven't. The term War Driving is taken from an old computer term called War Dialing. This is where a computer calls many, maybe thousands of phone numbers to find out which ones have modems connected to them. So what is War Driving? War Driving is the act of driving around a neighborhood mapping or collecting wireless networks or wireless internet connections. If you have a wireless internet connection or network you should read this article on the kare 11 television site and find out if your wireless connection is safe.

Process Library
Find out which Processes are running on Your Computer

 Process Library

Have you ever used ctrl-alt-delete to view the processes running on your computer and found yourself stumped by the strange names of the many different processes running in the task manager?

Help has arrived! The process library has definitions and explanations for necessary processes and those nasty Trojans, Spy ware and Malware.

Try ctrl-alt-delete, push down the ctrl and the alt key at the same time then press the delete key. Choose "Task Manager" then "Processes" from the window that pops up on your screen. (Some Screen Backgrounds go black when you do this, this is normal) It is not unusual to have 25 or more processes running on your computer at a given time, but how can you tell if one of them is hogging your precious computing resources? This is where the process library comes in, follow the link below and find out what each process on your computer is for.
