Planning has a Purpose
I like parables and thought I would use one to initiate this
months discussion. A group of people are
standing at a river bank and suddenly hear the cries of a
baby. Shocked, they see an infant floating--drowning--in the
water. One person immediately dives in to rescue the child.
But as this is going on, yet another baby comes floating down
the river, and then another! People continue to jump in to
save the babies and then see that one person has started to
walk away from the group still on shore. Accusingly they
shout, "where are you going?" The response: "I'm going
upstream to stop whoever's throwing babies into the river
A morbid example perhaps but it illustrates
a valid point. What does the story have to do with business? In
business we often find ourselves spending time putting out
little fires, there's one, rush over to put it out, oh no
another one, hurry over to extinguish it. We can spend all of
our time putting out fires without ever finding the source of
the flames. We are busy, but we never really accomplish
anything. How much better off would we be if we determined the
source of the flames and created a plan that would eliminate
or reduce them to a point where we seldom had to deal with
them? Imagine a business that was constantly
responding to customer complaints regarding one element of
their product. The more they sell, the more time they spend
responding to customer complaints. If the source of the
complaint is determined and a plan devised that would
eliminate or minimize the likely hood of the problem
occurring, the company could spend the lost time promoting and
selling their product. Think about the fires
you may be putting out on a regular basis. Can a plan be
formulated that would reduce the heat. If so, develop a plan
and implement it because as Smokey The Bear says, "Only You
Can Put out Forest Fires". I know, I know, but I couldn't
resist. |
