Avoiding Spam
Spam has now surpassed legitimate emails in numbers sent each
year. Many experts predict that Spam will double or triple
every twelve months. Spam can be more than an annoyance, time
spent dealing with Spam can cost companies thousands of man
hours each year.
First, lets take a look at how your email address gets on a
Spammers list in the first place. The number one method is
email harvesting. There are several software programs that
will scan the internet and harvest email addresses from your
website. This in conjunction with email sending viruses make
up the bulk of Spam lists.
How can you avoid Spam in the first place. Obfuscate or
encrypt email addresses on your website (PPP Design does
this for you), or better yet, use an email form that will
not reveal your address to harvesters. Use caution when
providing your email address online and check the privacy
policies of sites where your email address is requested.
Spam filters can help manage Spam, used in combination with
email software rules Spam can be whittled down as the rules
take effect. Throw away email addresses or email aliases can
be used for safe public posting. If the account starts to
generate Spam, cancel it and create another throw away
account. Proxy servers that check your email
on the server can be a great help, although they do not
eliminate spam they give you an opportunity to decide what to
download before the emails reach your computer.
Never respond to a Spam email and
do not unsubscribe, this simply lets the spammer know they
have reached a live email address.
