Search Engines
Google holds the largest share of searches of any search
engine. Bing, a new search engine from Microsoft has been
introduced and has been met with both rave and disappointing
reviews. Bing seems to have its strengths and only time will
tell if it will drive market share from Google. Why is any of
this important? Well, there are over 1.3 billion internet
users and 85 percent or more start at a search engine. That
makes search engines very important. While Google has a large
edge, others such as MSN (now Bing) and Yahoo! also hold
important shares of the search market.
What does each of these search engines have in common? Each
seems to like relevant content. Relevant content is
information on your site that is relevant to visitors and
search engines alike. In other words if your site is called
"CD's for everyone" and has a domain name of
"www.cdsforeveryone.com" then your site better be about CD's.
This is a simplistic example that doesn't take in to account
other factors that impact search engine rankings, but it does
highlight what the big three in search have in common.
Back links also impact your search engine rankings. Link
popularity on the internet is defined not only by the number
of links back to your site but also the caliber or authority
of the sites that link to you. In other words, if a popular
site links to your site without you linking back to that site,
you gain points with the search engines. No one but the search
engines know exactly how this works but authority sites are
the best back links to garner and seem to include government
websites, including schools, high traffic sites and
potentially other search engines.
Put all of this information together and a picture begins to
emerge. Relevant sites with links from popular or authority
sites indicate a level of popularity which generally
translates in to high search engine rankings. |
