Happy New Year!

Microsoft ™ has said goodbye to Windows 95™ and Windows 3.1™. These operating systems will no longer be supported by Microsoft. This means that updates and security patches will no longer be developed. As Operating Systems get older they also become more vulnerable, hackers and unscrupulous web designers can take advantage of an older system through trial and error.

As new Operating Systems are developed, older systems become less cost effective to support. Windows 95 has been heralded by many as the most innovative change in computing since the personal computer was developed. This doesn't necessarily mean it was the best operating system but rather that it had the biggest impact on the way people use their computers.

Since Windows 95, Microsoft has released Windows 98, 98SE, NT, Windows 2000, personal and professional editions, ME, and XP. Another edition of the popular operating system is already in the works, named Longhorn, it is thought to be an upgrade similar to what Windows 2000 was to Windows 98.

Content ....Content.....Content. Content is king on the internet. You have a website, created to show off your wares. It was designed to reflect a specific image so changing it every few weeks or months probably isn't such a good idea. However, new content, new items for sale, new specials, news items, attractions, weather, sports etc., can make a big difference in the number of people that not only visit but return to your site again and again.

We all know that constantly changing a website is time consuming, but there are ways to change your content without spending hours in front of the computer or spending a fortune.

Choose a section of your site, it may be monthly or weekly specials, links, area news, event calendars etc. Update that section of your site regularly and visitors will return to view the updates.

If your site isn't conducive to these types of changes, offer news headlines, sports, a daily cartoon, stock ticker or site of the day to attract repeat visits to your site.. Many of these can be implemented in your site with java scripts, VB scripts, or I frames. What this means is that the content is imported from another source and updated automatically, giving your site fresh content on a regular basis.

Start Up Programs & Problems

Are you having problems with programs that start automatically when windows starts? Have you installed a program that didn't ask permission to start with Windows? There is a small utility provided with most Windows operating systems that allows you to easily shut down programs that boot on start up.

The utility is the System Configuration Utility. To see if the utility is available on your system, click Start, then Run, and type "msconfig.exe" (without the quotes) and click O.K. The utility should pop up on your screen if it is available. Choose "Startup" from the tabs that run across the top of the utility. Uncheck the box next to the offending program and click on apply, then O.K. You will need to restart your system for the change to take place.

If the utility isn't available on your system check the link below and follow the instructions to download and install the utility.
