Small Business?
I often hear people say, "I just run a small business." So do
most people! Of approximately 25 1/2 million businesses
recorded in the 2004 census approximately 19 1/2 million had
no employees (other than owners of course). Another 2.7
million had 4 or less employees. And still another million
companies had 9 employees or less. That means that of the 25.5
million businesses recorded over 23 million had 9 employees or
less.
Don't sell yourself short, you and others like you are what
make the US economy work. Large companies had higher sales
receipts but when looked at logically this makes sense. A
company with 500 employees needs to make at least as many
sales as 500 individually owned businesses just to meet
payroll, benefits and other overhead expenses.
Without small businesses there would be a huge gap in
specialized products and services. Many small businesses fill
gaps that large companies simply can't fill. There isn't
enough money involved for a large company to justify the
expense required to serve these markets. And don't forget the
personal touch that small business can offer, big business
just can't compete in this arena.
Just remember, your small business along with others like you
makes for big business when you look at the numbers. |
Cloud Computing
Sounds exotic, doesn't it? What is Cloud
Computing and how will it affect you? Well if you manage a
large IT Department where millions of bits of Corporate data
is stored it may have a large impact on your life. Otherwise
it may help you find information faster, but I doubt it will
change your life.
Cloud Computing is a concept where
applications will be supplied online rather than loading the
application on your computer. Multiple processors will be tied
together to achieve greater computing power and provide not
only pre-stored data but it will create new information by
analyzing information from existing data.
A thinking Internet? Linking thousands of
computers processing power along with the internets vast data
stores may create what appears to be a thinking system. Not
just a search of data but an understanding of the data and the
ability to analyze it is the goal for Internet Cloud
Computing.
An Internet test is planned for later this
year. Within six years, this process will expand so that
corporations will rely less on on-site information technology
infrastructure and more on applications supplied online by the
"cloud," said Barry Lynn, chief of 3Tera, a California-based
software company.
