E-mail Scam Leads to Identity Theft

Watch out for emails that appear to be from PayPal and ask you to follow a link to confirm your personal account information. More than likely the link leads to a spoofed site where the information collected is used to steal your identity. Identity theft isn't new and neither is this method of gathering information.

Visit the Fight Identity Theft web site for more information on regarding how the PayPal Email Scam works.

PayPal is a highly respected member of the internet community and they offer a few tips regarding this scam. "Only enter your PayPal password on pages where the URL begins with https://www.paypal.com/. Even if the URL contains the word 'PayPal', it may not be a PayPal webpage." The "s" at the end of "https" stands for "secure". This means your information is being transmitted over a secure connection. A secure connection is typically encoded with 128 bit encryption.

In years past 40 bit encryption was considered strong. Roughly speaking, 128-bit encryption is 309,485,009,821,345,068,724,781,056 times stronger than 40-bit encryption. Presently, 40-bit encryption is not considered "strong" security in the cryptographic community. However, even taking into account Moore's Law, which states that computing power doubles about every 18 months, 128-bit encryption represents a very strong method of encryption for the foreseeable future.

If you receive any e-mail requesting personal information make sure the destination of the information is valid, and make sure the information is transmitted over a secure encrypted line.

How to Build Your Brand

Treat Your Customers With Respect
People today are more creative, more selective, and they have more control over where they do business. The brands they select are those who treat them as intelligent adult partners. If we want their business we must acknowledge this in our Brand Building strategy.

Your Brand Should Focus on Your Customers - But it shouldn't be led by them.
Customers need to feel like the products you offer deliver real benefits and that your service or services will make their lives easier. Don't count on your customers to be your R&D division however, what these products and services are is up to you. A customer driven brand should anticipate the needs of their clients through knowledge of those clients.

Don't become obsessed with creating a great slogan.
Yes, it's nice if you have one but it isn't always necessary or fruitful. If you are unsure if this is true try to remember the tag line for Microsoft or Mercedes!

Remember your brands place in peoples lives.
People are busy. Don't expect their lives to revolve around your brand. Instead, your brand should provide a comfortable opportunity for your customer to build a relationship with you. Do not try to manage your customers, rely on managing the relationship you build with your customers.

If your staff doesn't get it, no one will.
One of my pet peeves is visiting a fast food restaurant, going through the drive through, giving up my hard earned money for food that is generally mediocre at best and...nothing. I mean the person at the window doesn't say thank you. Being the gentle soul that I am, I always say, "Your Welcome," anyway. Generally I receive an ugly stare and I smile and drive away. All they have to offer is fast, friendly service. But someone along the line forgot to pass on that message. So make sure the front lines understand the brand message.

Brands are more about what you do than what you say.
We all know that if we say one thing and do another trust is lost. It is important to deliver what the "brand" says it will. Whether it is done by providing great service, innovative products that meet customer needs or maybe just maybe it is done by saying thank you.

Be Consistent
The single most important step in building a brand is consistency. Our brand can grow, progress, and evolve but it shouldn't go through wholesale change. Tweaking a brand is more like a jab than an uppercut. It gets attention but doesn't leave our customers wondering where that came from.

In an effort to help people visiting from either coast understand the rural Midwesterner's mind, the following list will be handed to each person as they enter the State.

1.That slope-shouldered farm boy did more work before breakfast than you do all week at the gym.

2. Any references to "corn fed" when talking about our women will get you whipped ... by our women.

3.Go ahead and bring your $600 Orvis Fly Rod. Don't cry to us if a flathead breaks it off at the handle. We have a name for those little 13-inch trout you fish for ... bait.

4.If that cell phone rings while a bunch of mallards are making their final approach, we will shoot it. You might hope you don't have it up to your ear at the time.

5.You bring Coke into my house, it better be brown, wet, and served over ice.

6.So you have a sixty thousand dollar car. We're real impressed. We have quarter of a million dollar combines that we use two weeks a year.

7.Our women hunt, fish, and drive trucks because they want to. So, you're a feminist. Isn't that cute?

8.So every person in every pickup waves. It's called being friendly. Understand the concept?

9.Yeah, we have golf courses. Don't hit in the water hazards. It spooks the fish.

10.It's called a "gravel road." No matter how slow you drive, you're going to get dust on your Navigator. I have a four-wheel drive because I need it. Drive it or get it out of the way.

11.That Highway Patrol Officer that just pulled you over for driving like an idiot ....... his name is "Sir" ... no matter how old he is.

Now, enjoy your visit and then GO HOME...ASAP!
